Dialect
The time and place in which the events of a literary work occur
Setting
The methods a writer used to reveal the personality of a character
Characterization
The writer makes explicit statements about a character
Direct characterization
The writer reveals a character through his or her words, thoughts, and actions and through what other characters think and say about the character
Indirect characterization
The standpoint from which a story is told
Point of view
The narrator is a character in the story and uses the words I and me
First person POV
The narrator is someone who stands outside the story and describes the characters and action
Third person POV
The narrator knows everything about the characters and events and may reveal details that the characters themselves could not reveal
Third person omniscient POV
An authors attitude toward his or her subject matter or the audience. It is conveyed through elements such as word choice, punctuation, sentence structure and figures of speech
Tone
The library representation of a characters free flowing thoughts, feelings, and memories.
Stream of consciousness
An interruption in the chronological order of a narrative to show an event that happened earlier.
Flashback
The central struggle between two opposing forces in a story or drama
Conflict
Struggle that takes place within the mind of a character who is torn between opposing feelings, desires, or goals.
Internal conflict
A character struggle against some outside force
External conflict
