What is Allusion and provide an example.
A reference to something outside the text, like a famous person, place, or event, that the reader is expected to understand.
Example: “He was a real Romeo with the ladies,” referencing Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet.
What is an Analogy and provide an example.
A comparison between two things to explain or clarify an idea.
Example: “Just as a sword is the weapon of a warrior, a pen is the weapon of a writer.”
What is Antithesis and provide an example.
A contrast or opposition between two things, usually expressed in
parallel structure.
Example: “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.”
What is Assonance and provide an example.
The repetition of vowel sounds within nearby words.
Example: “Hear the mellow wedding bells.”
What is an Epithet and provide an example.
A descriptive term used to
characterize someone or something.
Example: “Swift-footed Achilles” in The Iliad.
What is Induction and provide an example.
A method of reasoning where generalizations are made based on specific facts or evidence.
Example: Seeing several white swans and concluding that all swans must be white.
What is Negative-Positive and provide an example.
A sentence structure where a negative statement is made first, followed by a positive one.
Example: “Not only did she win, but she broke the record.”
What is a Paradox and provide an example.
A statement that seems contradictory but reveals an underlying truth.
Example: “Less is more.”
What is an Understatement and provide an example.
A way of presenting something as less important or serious than it actually is.
Example: “It’s just a scratch,” when referring to a large dent in the car.
