Anaphora
Rhetoric - the repetition of a word or phrase at the beginning of successive clauses
Alliteration
The repitition of similar initial consonant sounds
Oohhh, I love a lilting line of lyrical alliteraaationnn
Allusion
- A brief, indirect reference tk a historical or literary person, event or object
Example: Magnus Chase
Enjambement
Doorlopende versregel - komisch effect (vaag hoor)
Example: “Cause you love hard, kore only half the time” - Achilles Heel
(Hardcore and Kore/persephone)
Euphemism
The use of inoffensive, mild or vague words in place of harsher, more blunt ones.
That old lady died - The old lady passed away
Foreshadowing
Foreshadowing is a device which hints or warns the eventsbto happen later in the story - prepares the reader for climax and changes
Example: literally every anime op ever
Hyperbole
Deliberate exaggeration in order to emphasise a fact or feeling
Ik heb honger als een paard
She’s as tall as a skyscraper
Imagery
Descriptions and figures of speech that help the mind form forceful/bootyful pictures
Sensory Imagery:
- Visual imagery - sense of sight
- Olfactory imagery - sense of smell
- Auditory imagery - sense of hearing
- Tactile imagery - sense of touch
- Gustatory imagery - sense of taste
Metaphor
An implied comparison between 2 things, which does not use the words like or as in the comparison.
A word or phrase that ordinarily mean one thing is used to describe another thing in orde to suggest a likeness between the two
Example:
- It was raining cats and dogs
- Never look a gifted horse in the mouth
Onomatopoeia
The use of a word that closely resembles the sound to which it refers.
Example:
“Bark”
“Buzz”
Personification
A special form of metaphor in which human characteristics are attributed to animals, inanimate objects or ideas.
Simile
A comparison using the words like and as.
Example: Her eyes were like the sea
Tricolon
Drie vergelijkbare delen. (Echt waar dit heb ik op moeten zoeken en het slaat nergens oppp het is gwn een fucking opsomming)
Example: Ik heb het bed, de kamer en het huis verlaten.
(Je kunt ze alledrie verlaten)
Assonance
Alliteration maar met klinkers
Intertextuality
When one text refers to another literary source outside of the text - gives enhanced meaning
