Ekphrastic
Form of writing wherein the author describes another work of art.
Epilogue
Acts as the afterword once the last chapter is over.
Epithet
Add to a person or place’s regular name and attribute some special quality to the same.
EG:
“Alexander the Great”
Euphemism
Uses a milder form of a negative description instead of its original form. Used when writing about: sex, violence, death etc.
Euphony
Use of phrases and words that are noted for possessing an extensive degree of loveliness.
Faulty Parallelism
Refer to the practice placing together similarly structure related phrases, words or clauses.
Flashback
Author depicts the occurrence of specific events to the reader, which have taken place before the narration started.
Foil
A character who contrasts the main character, to highlight one of their attributes.
Foreshadowing
Use of indicative word or phrases and hints that set the stage for a story to unfold and give the reader a hint of what is to come.
Hubris
Another way of saying overly arrogant. The character may have a false belief that they are ‘untouchable’.
Hyperbaton
Author plays with regular positioning of words and phrases and creates a differently structured sentence to convey the same meaning.
Hyperbole
Words and phrases used to emphasise a statement.
