Comic Relief (R&J)
Is a character used to release tension and stress with in the play or novel
Foil
Is a character or thing that directly contrast with another character or thing
Tragic Hero (R&J)
Is usually the protagonist that has everything they need. However through terrible events they lose it all
Fatal Flaw (R&J)
Is a characteristic that a character has that causes their death. Also something that happens to cause death
Pathos
Is when the audience feels sympathy, sorrow, or pity for a character
Symbols
Something that is reoccurring in the novel or play and has a significant meaning
Irony
A character says something, then the opposite happens
Dramatic Irony (R&J)
When a character in the play says or does something that the audience already knows the outcome of
Foreshadowing
When a character or event hints at an event that could happen in the future play
Soliloquy (R&J)
When a character from the play speaks their thoughts while alone
Nemesis
Is a character that intervenes to kill or pay back the character that has done terrible things
Foreboding
When a character or event hints at a terrible event that will happen in the future
Atmosphere
The tone or mood of a place or situation
Character Development
Creating a believable character in fiction by giving personality and depth
Plot
The main events in a play or novel
