Allegory
Using symbolism in everything in the text to convey meaning- from the characters to the structure- in a broad perspective
Symbolism
Using a physical being to connote an abstract idea
Alliteration
Using repetitive sounds to convey the proliferation of an idea, pace of piece, auditory imagery, etc
Allusion
Unexplained reference to an event or piece outside the text
Anachronism
Refers to a person or a thing in the wrong place
Anadiplosis
Repeating a phrase at the end of a sentence and at the beginning of the next
Analogy
Using two different ideas to compare them and pick out similarities (Being a CEO of a company is like being an orchestra conductor)
Anaphora
Repetition of a phrase at the beginning of the sentence
Antagonist
Oppose the protagonist and create conflict
Antanaclasis
One word is repeated several times in the sentence but means something different each time
Antithesis
Placing two different ideas together
Aporia
To express uncertainty (How do I love thee? Let me count the ways)
Asyndeton
Omits connectives
Cacophony
A string of unpleasant-sounding words
