Setting
Refers to both time and place in which the events of the story take place
Protagonist
The main character of the story
Antagonist
The chief enemy of the protagonist
Conflict
The central source of tension ( aka the problem )
Verbal irony
Someone says the opposite of what they really feel of mean ( sarcasm )
Situational irony
Incongruity appears between the expecting of ( plot twist )
Dramatic irony
The expression of ones meaning by using language that normally signifies the opposite. ( the audience/ reader knows more than the characters)
Symbolism
Something that stands for more than itself
Theme
The overall message/ idea of the story
Climax
The highest point of action in the story
Suspense
Techniques used by the author to keep readers interested and wondering what will happen next
Simile
Direct comparison using the words like it as
Alliteration
A literary technique where the author creates a difference between what appears to be and what is real
Personification
Giving human characteristics to inanimate objects
Tone
Expresses the authors attitude toward his/ her subject
Mood
The atmosphere or feeling created by a literary work for the reader
Allusion
A brief reference or hint which could refer to historical characters, another text, pop culture, events or mythology
Metaphor
An indirect comparison between two things
Foreshadow
Hints st future events
Imagery
Appears to the readers 5 senses
Hyperbole
Exaggerated statements or crains not meant to be taken literally
