Saying something is another thing directly. ‘His heart is made of gold!’
Metaphor.
A trigger or warning to something that is going to happen. It teases readers about plot twists that will happen later on in the story.
Foreshadowing.
Making something almost human-like, ‘The trees leaves danced across the night sky.’
Personification
Creating an image in someones head using words like ‘his breath fogged up the window pane’.
Imagery.
Lending the act of a human quality, do not get this confused with personification. ‘The raging storm’ is an example.
Anthropomorphism.
Using words which imply harsh and almost violent sounds like ‘Thumping’ or ‘Grasping’
Cacophony.
Something mixed with bad luck will lead to the death of a character in a story.
Hamartia.
A character’s mental blindness to something.
Ate
Using a word next to it’s opposite. ‘Bitter sweet,’ is an example of this.
Contrastive pair.
Using words in a group of three, ‘He was old, tired and selfish.’
A group of three.
