Alliteration
the repetition of similar initial consonant sounds to make a musical or rhythmic effect
Allusion
a reference to a well-known person, place, event, literary work, or work of art, often used to help make a comparison
Flashback
a section in a literary piece that interrupts the sequence of events to relate to earlier events.
foreshadowing
an author’s clues or hints of what’s to come
Free verse
poetry that has no formal rhymes, stanzas, or rhythmic pattern
Hyperbole
use of extreme exaggeration
Idiom
A word or phrase meaning something different from what it says, which isn’t literal.
Imagery
Words or phrases that appeal to one or more of the five senses and help to create a vivid description
Metaphor
a figure of speech describing something as if it were something else
Oxymoron
the close placement of unalike words used to create a unique meaning.
Personification
a type of figurative language in which a non-human subject has human characteristics
Simile
A comparison using “like” or “as”
Stanza
A group of lines in a poem
Internal Rhyme
two or more words that rhyme within the same line of poetry
Onomatopoeia
words whose sounds suggests their meaning.
Figurative Language
the use of descriptive words that convey a message without directly saying it.
Novel in Verse
a novel told in poems instead of prose
Ode
a poem in praise or celebration of something
Form
shape or structure of a story, how knowledge or information is expressed or communicated.
