An extended metaphor in the form of a story in which the characters, places or objects carry a figurative meaning
Allegory
A reference to a historical, mythic, or literary person, place event or movement.
Allusion
A statement with two or more possible meanings. Also called double-meaning
Ambiguity
Similarities between two concepts or ideas, mentally linking them together
Analogy
Repetition of a word or words ath the beginning of successive phrases, clauses or lines.
Anaphora
Combining two opposite ideas or clauses with opposite meanings to achieve a contrasting effect
Antithesis
The speaker of a poem directly addresses an abstract or imaginary person
Apostrophe
A reference to a concept, a person or an object that is the original idea that has come to be used over and over again
Archetype
A form of poetry that tells a story
Ballad
A set of texts that serve as a recognized standard of stylistic quality

The use of a mild, indirect, or more polite term or expression instead of one considered too blunt or offensive
Euphemism
When a poet or writer gives a hint of upcoming events
Foreshadowing
The use of multiple senses to create a mental picture
