Allusion
A reference in one story to a well known character or event from another story, history, or place.
Alliteration
repeated consonant sound at the beginning of words or within words; used to establish mood/rythem in a story
Anectdote
A very short story that is told to make a point.
Conflict
the problem or challenge a main character faces
Dialogue
spoken lines between characters.
Flashback
A scene that interrupts the action to show an event that happened in the past.
Flash-Forward
A sudden jump forward in time
foreshadowing
The use of hints or clues in a narrative to suggest what action is to come
Hyperbole
obvious exaggeration which is not meant to be taken literally
imagery
mental pictures that are created by desciptions of the senses, so that we can see and feel what the character is experiences
irony
contrast between the expected outcome and the actual way things turn out
metaphor
comparison between two unlike things in order to point out a similarity, Does not use like, as, or than
motif
A reoccuring feature such as a name, an image, or a phrase, in a work of literature
oxymoron
a self controdicting word or group of words
personification
A figure of speech in which something non-human is given human traits
