What is foreshadow?
-gives you a clue that something is going to happen (ex, I have a bad feeling about this)
What is symbolism?
-when a character or event serves as an example of something or someone in real life (ex, rainbows symbolize hope and promise)
What is suspense?
- building up excitement (ex, the sound in the distance became louder, louder and louder)
What is personification?
-giving human action or qualities to things that are not alive (ex, the trees danced in the wind)
What is a simile?
-a comparison of two unlike things using like or as (ex, small like a mouse)
What is a metaphor?
-a comparison of two unlike things;states one thing IS something else (ex, he is a eagle in the night)
What is a hyperbole?
-extreme exaggeration for effect (ex, I felt as if 600 knifes has stabbed by toe)
What is allusion?
-reference to something well-known in literature, history, or the arts (ex, she smiled like the Mona Lisa)
What is onomatopoeia?
-sound effect on words (ex, crash bang!)
What is alliteration?
-2 or 3 words in a row with the same sound (ex, happy hopeful home)
What is irony?
-when the reverse of what is expected comes true (ex, a wife sells her hair to by her husband a watch, and the husband sells his watch to by combs for his wife’s hair)
What is imagery?
-vivid description using 5 senses (ex, I felt the cold rain against my moist skin, I hear it dripping from the tree branches, I see it blur my vision into a hazy focus. I can smell the moist smell of wet plants and bark. I stick out my tongue at taste the fresh cold water against my sandpaper tongue.)
