What is an idiom?
a idiom hold a different meaning than its literal meaning
What is an oxymoron?
a combination of contridictory or incoungrous words. This means two words that are opposite are beside one another in a sentence.
What is tone?
the writers feelings about the topic/subject
What is mood?
the feeling the reader gets from the writing
What is onomatopoeia?
the name of an item or activity by mimicking the associated sound vocally
What is hyperbole?
when you exaggerate something for the effect, it is not meant to be taken literally
What is foreshadowing?
an indication of something that will happen in the future or suggest future plot moments
What is alliteration?
the occurance of the same letter or sound at the beginning of adjacent or closley connected words
What is a pathetic fallacy?
the attribution of human emotions to inanimate objects, nature, or animals
What is personification?
gives human characteristics to a nonhuman thing or inanimate object
What is assonance?
same vowel is repeated several times throughout the sentence
What is dramatic irony?
when the readers know something that the character does not
What is verbal irony?
the literal meaning is different from what they really mean
What is metaphor?
comparing two unrelated ideas without using ‘like’ or ‘as’
What is a pun?
a humerous use of a word or phrase that has several meanings or that sounds like another word
