What is the definition of the hero archetype?
- Always male
- may be born from unusual circumstances (virgin mother)
- escapes an attempt of murder against him
- returns to homeland (after a victory over an antagonist)
- marries a princess, becomes king and later dies a mysterious death or gets banished
- may involve a journey where hero has to answer riddles, find a sacred or powerful artifact, or battle superhuman creatures to save someone else
- Ex. Hercules, Prince charming
What is the definition of the Scapegoat archetype?
- becomes the sacrificial victim who is put to death by the community to remove guilt of the people and restore their health and welfare (sometimes hero)
- could be an aminal but more likely human
- Ex. Minotaur, ram sacrificed to make shofar
What is the definition of the outcast archetype?
- character who is thrown out of the community as punishment for a crime against it
- fate is to wander for eternity
- Ex. Elsa, Romeo, The Beast
What is the definition of the devil archetype?
- personifies the principle of evil that intrudes the life of a character to tempt and destroy them (often by promising wealth or fame or knowledge in exchange for soul)
- Ex. Ursula
What is the definition of the good mother archetype?
- Always female
- associated with fertility and abundance
- nurtures those around her
- Ex. fairy godmother
Definition of the temptress archetype?
- Always female
- destroys the men who are attracted to her sensuality and beauty
- causes the men’s downfall
- Ex. Pamela from story in class, Sirens
Definition of the muse archetype?
- Always female
- inspired the souls and minds of men
- spiritual or platonic ideal
- relationship isn’t physical instead she guides and directs and fulfils her male counterpart
- Ex. fashion designer, Woman for mona lisa
What is the definition of the unfaithful wife archetype?
- Always female
- often married to a dull insensitive husband and turns to a more desirable man to be her lover
- ends with unhappy consequences
- Ex. Victoria from english story
What is the definition of the trickster archetype?
- often in African american and american indian stories
- mischievous, disorderly and doesn’t have morals
- disrupts strict rule bound cultures bringing them to reminders of their less strict beginnings
- Ex. Loki, Cheshire cat

What are examples of the colour archetype?
- Red: passion, sacrifice, violence
- Green: fertility, fullness of life, hope
- Blue: holiness, sadness, sanctity
- Light: hope, inspiration, enlightenment, rebirth
- Darkness: ignorance, hopelessness, death
What are examples of the numbers archetype?
- 3: spirituality (holy trinity)
- 4: four seasons (cycle of life), four elements
- 3+4 = 7: a powerful product that is perfect whole and complete
What are examples of the water archetype?
- creation, birth, rebirth
- flowing water —> passage of time
- lack of water or desert —> spiritually barren state
What is a characters shadow?
- a persons unconscious self that one tends to reject or ignore
- least desirable aspect of a persons personality
- usually negative
What is a characters persona
- that mask we put on for the world
- maybe not be what we think of ourselves on the inside
What is a characters anima?
- motivating life force of a person
How does a person achieve individuation?
- through self actualisation
- discover and accept all sides of themselves
What are examples of the gardens archetype?
- paradise
- state of innocence
- Ex. garden of eden
What are examples of the circles archetype?
- lack of beginnings or endings
- state of wholeness and union
what are examples of the sun archetype?
- passage of time
- rising —> beginning
- setting —> death/ending
- full presence —> enlightenment or radiant knowledge
What are the 3 situational archetypes?
- the quest
- death and rebirth
- initiation
What are examples of the quest archetype?
- persued by a hero
- involves a difficult search for a magic or holy item that will return fertility and abundance to a desolate state
- often has the need to preform a nearly impossible task so that all will be well
- includes the journey which includes a psychological and physical movement from one place or state to another
- may include descent into hell
Death and rebirth archetype?
- cycle of the seasons
rebirth in the form of natural regeneration in submission to the cycles of nature - escape from troubled life to endless paradise like before the fall into suffering
Initiation
- progression from 1 stage of life to another
- from childhood to maturity
- innocence to understanding
- goes through initiation alone experiencing tests and ordeals so they can return as an adult
