point of view/narration form
vantage point from which a narrative is told
first person
speaker uses “I” or “me”
second person
speaker addresses readier directly using “you.” often the speaker still refers to him or herself as “I” along with addressing the reader as “you,” so if you see “I,” don’t automatically assume first person
3rd person omniscient
narrator uses “he,” “she,” and character names and knows the thoughts and feelings of 2+ characters
3rd person limited (omniscient)
narrator uses “he,” “she,” and character names and knows the thoughts and feelings of ONLY 1 character
3rd person objective
narrator uses “he,” “she,” and character names and knows the thoughts and feelings of ZERO characters
perspective
the screen or set of ideas, attitudes, beliefs an circumstances through which a person or character sees the world
tone
author’s attitude towards subject. tone is created through the combined effects of various features of language in text. tone is a major feature in establishing the overall impression of the piece of writing.
atmosphere/mood
the prevailing mood created by a piece of writing. it refers to the feeling created in the reader (as opposed to tone, which is the writer or speaker’s attitude toward the subject, events, or other characters)
structure
the way a text or passage is constructed or put together. this might include the order in which topics are covered, the amount of time that is spent on each topic, and what topics are included and which are left out
story
the events (in actual order) that are related in a text
plot
the events as they are related in the text (note that the story may therefore be different from the plot) you might think of plot as a way that events are “packaged” in the narrative
narrative arc
the graphical representation of the rise and fall of dramatic tension throughout a text. exposition, complication, climax, resolution
exposition
typically found at the story’s beginning, this is where characters, settings, and situations are introduced
complication
where actions and events complicate the initial situation
