What is a narrator?
A narrator is a person telling the story
What is a short story?
A sequence of events told with less detail than a novel
What is foreshadowing?
Foreshadowing is when an author (or playwright!!) gives clues or hints of what is to come next in the story.
What is setting?
Setting is the time place and culture of a story.
What is suspense?
Suspense is a feeling of curiosity, uncertainty or dread about what will happen next.
What is theme?
Theme is the ‘big message’ the author is saying about life
What is symbolism??
Symbolism is when a concrete object is used to represent more than it’s actual self; an object carries a significance beyond itself
What does narration mean?
Narration means the telling of a story
What is point of view (literary - NOT the opinion held by someone!)
How the story is being told; from which focus the story is told: 1st, 2nd or 3rd person
What is first person point of view?
The point of view in which the author tells a story about himself or herself, and refers to self as I
What is third person limited point of view?
The point of view which the narrator tells the story about other people, and only knows one person’s thoughts and feelings
What is the omniscient third person point of view?
The point of view in which the narrator tells the story about other people, but knows what they all think or feel
What is conflict?
Conflict is the dramatic struggles between two forces in the story. If you do not have any conflict, you don’t have a plot.
What is plot?
Plot is the pattern of action in a story
What is the exposition in plot?
The exposition is the introduction of setting or characters
What is rising action in plot?
Rising action is a series of conflicts in the story that lead to the climax
What is climax in the plot?
Climax is the turning point of the story; the most interesting moment mentally and/or physically.
