Characterization
The method an offer uses to review or describe the characters personality
Allusion
A reference to a person, place, event, or thing that is considered common knowledge
Foreshadowing
Hints or clues about what will happen in the story
Irony
When the outcome of events is contrary to what a reader might have expected
Foil
A character who serves to accentuate that the main characters distinctive qualities
Juxtaposition
Placing two ideas or images side-by-side so that their closeness creates a new often ironic meaning
Point of view
The vantage point from which the events of the story are told
First-person narrator uses I , third person narrator uses he she they
Mood
the feeling a piece of literature arouses and the reader through the authors choice of details
Diction
The authors choice of words based on the effect he or she wants to create
Flashback
Presenting an image or seen from an earlier time in the story for the purpose of making something in the present clear
Tone
The writers attitude towards the subject or characters he or she is writing about
Syntax
The order and a relationship of words in the sentence, sentence structure
Analogy
A comparison of the light features of two or more things
Simile
A comparison between two unlike items using like or as
Metaphor
A comparison between two unlike things that didn’t not use the words like or as
Example: her cheeks were shiny red apples
