Lit. LOF Essay Questions Flashcards
Describe Piggy and Ralph
Piggy represents intelligence in Lord of the Flies. He is smartest out of all of the boys on the island. The other boys think he can not do much because of his small amount of endurance and asthma, but he can be one of the reasons that the boys survive. Ralph is like Piggy in a way. He wants organization and wants the boys to be civil. He is more like an adult than a child.
How do the boys divide the responsibilities and chores?
Jack and his choir boys are the hunters. Some of them are also incharge of maintaining the signal fire. The rest of the boys are supposed to be building the huts, but only Ralph, Simon, and Piggy are the only ones building the huts.
Why are the boys on the island?
The boys in Lord of the Flies crash landed on the island (because they were shot down). The boys were on a plane because they were being evacuated out of Britain because of the bombing there in World War 2. Britain sent the children away because they wanted to keep them safe because they were the future of Britain.
Of what are the littl’uns afraid and how does it affect the boys?
When the boys first came one of the little ones saw what he called a beastie. None of the older kids believed him, but at night everyone became scared of sleeping without shelter. Many could not sleep and they cried at night.
How do the boys build the fire, why is it necessary (Ralph’s explanation), and who is in charge of maintaining it?
Ralph said, “ If a ship comes near the island they may not notice us. So we must make smoke on top of the mountain. We must make fire.” Jack says some of his hunters will be incharge of maintaining it.
What happens to the littlun with the birthmark?
While the boys are making the fire they don’t notice that one of the boys are missing. The forest starts to burn down and that is when they are all together again. This is when Piggy brings up that the little boy with the birthmark is missing. He had probably died in the fire when no one was paying attention.
Describe the conflict between Ralph and Jack
Ralph was voted chief, but Jack also wants to be chief. Ralph thinks they should be civilized and have plans. Jack on the other hand is violent and could cause them to all die with his dangerous ways.
Give a character sketch of Simon
Simon is a kind boy. He represents kindness in the book. He is also the most mysterious out of the boys. He is skinny and vivid with black, straight hair.
