What is the procedure on arrival at a fire scene?
- Briefly interview your informant
- Secure and control the scene
- Initial interview of SFI (if present) and OC of first fire appliance
- Interview the incident controller at the scene
- If fire estignsihed, ensure safety of of scene before initial conference.
- Conduct preliminary examination of scene
- If deemed suspicious regroup and hold a briefing conference
- Give COMMS a sitrep
What witnesses can be interviewed?

What are the steps to take for guarding and controlling the scene?
PERSPIRE
PRESERVING evidence
ENSURING the scene is not interfered with
REPORT all significant matters to the OC investigation/scene
Be vigilant and watch for possible SUSPECTS
PREVENTING looting
ID witnesses among passers by or onlookers
Be aware of RE-IGNITION from hotspots
EXCLUSION and control of on-lookers/property owners/inerested parties

What does the external examination take into account?
It PAYS to check ALLEYWAYS and the surrounding area for SCARs and a FEW PATTERNS
- The PERIPHERY of the structure itself
- ADJOINING premises which is likely to reveal accelernt containers, broken windows, forced doors or attempts to of forced entry
- YARDS and outbuildings of the fire effected property
- Distance that debris have been SCATTERED
The surrounding area may reveal
- Business appears to be STRUGGLING
- CONTENTS of outbuildings missing
- ACCELERANT containers
- Property RUN-DOWN
The structure itself may reveal:
- Jemmy marks or other signed of FORCED ENTRY
- WINDOW glass broken before fire was ignited
- Burn PATTERS above doors and windows and a V shape burn pattern on external cladding
What should you take note of during the preliminary internal examination?

- LACK of clothing in wardrobe/draws
- Unusual ODOURS
- SEPARATE unrelated seats of fire
- Signs of HARDSHIP
