Gram positive rod

How is it transmitted?
A
- Mostly foodborne as it grows at 4degreescelcius (animal produce, salads)
- Widespread in environment, soil, water, animal GIT

What diseases does it cause?
A
- Gastroenteritis
- Bacteraemia
- Meningitis/encephalitis

Who is at risk?
A
Mainly immunocompromised
1. Elderly >65y/o (x4 fold risk)
2. Pregnant (x100 fold risk) - abortion, stillbirth, sepsis
3. Neonates
4. Cancer, diabetes mellitus, alcoholic

Treatment
A
Ampicillin +/- gentamicin
Susceptible to penicillin/ampicillin/amoxycillin

What is it resistant to?
A
Cephlasporin
