Listeria!
What are the vacuolar bacterial pathogens we’ve learned about?
Chlamydiae
Salmonella (enteric)
Mycobacteria
Intracellular can mean two things. How are they classified?
Vacuolar or cytosolic
What are characteristics of listeria monocytogenes?
Low G+C gram + bacteria
Rapidly growing; ubiquitous in nature.
Where is listeria found in nature?
Been isolated from over 50 different warm-blooded animals. Wide ecological niche.
Isolated from water, soil, vegetation, and dairy products
At what temperatures can listeria grow?
From 4-44 degrees Celsius. But it has temperature dependent motility
What is the vaccine for listeria??
Killed vaccines don’t work
Why are pregnant women advised to avoid cheese?
Cuz listeria can be fatal in 40% of those infected by the disease. And listeria lives at any temperature pretty much.
What types of cells do listeria infect?
All adherent cells and macrophages. Efficiency of internalization varies by a lot.
How does listeria exit the phagosome?
LLO lyses the phagosome.
