What is a mordent?
An ornament where a note is played the the note above/below then back to the original note
(sounds similar to a trill but short)
What is mode/modal?
The early scales, sounds old
eg. Dorian mode
What is a recitative?
Music follows the rhythm of speech, used to tell story quickly
What is a sonata?
A work for solo piano, solo instrument and piano
What is soul music?
Motown music
> funky, blues, gospel influences
What is diminution?
A decrease in the length of notes
sounds sped up
What are irregular time signatures?
Time signatures with an unusual number of beats in a bar eg. 7
Sounds weird and hard to count/listen to
What is a basso continuo?
in baroque period: Plays the bass part in a concerto Grosso. it supports 1 or more melodies
What is a ripieno?
The larger group of instrumentalists in a concerto grosso
What is a concertino?
A small group of soloists in a concerto grosso
What is a concerto grosso?
An orchestra in the baroque period featuring a small and big group
What is a da capo aria?
An aria in ternary form (ABA) 3rd section is often ornamented
What is an acciaccatura?
An ornament
>a crushed note played very quickly
What are the minor scales featured?
Harmonic minor - snake charmer, middle eastern
Melodic minor - minor scale mixed with whole tone, sounds wrong
What is an interrupted cadence?
A 6th chord at the end of a phrase, sounds unfinished
minor 6th chord
What is an interval?
The distance between 2 notes
eg. difference between A and E is a 4th
What is plainchant music?
Unaccompanied melody set to Latin words - religious
It is modal, sounds old and churchy
What is an oratorio?
Like an opera but religious
What is music concrete?
Sound recorded on tape which is then altered by playing backwards, slowing down/ speeding up etc.

A large scale religious work sung in latin for solo sigers, chorus and orchestra

How do you figure out the key signature?
Find the sharp on the hand side and move 1 note up
What is the order of sharps for key signatures?
F,C,G,D,A,E,B (Father Charles Goes Down And Ends Battle)
What are the notes on the treble clef?
Spaces : FACE Lines : EGBDF (Every Green Bus Drives Fast)
What are the notes on the bass clef?
Spaces : ACEG (All Cows Eat Grass) Lines : GBDFA (Good Boys Deserve Football Always)
What is coloratura?
High, florid singing with heavy ornamentation

Trembling, string instruments usually
