Ex: technological items being ameliorated all the time

the act of officially expressing strong disapproval and criticism
Ex: politicians always being censured for their actions

a difference between things especially an unfair difference
similar to- inconsistency
EX: disparity between our schools and LA schools
Esteem
a feeling of respect and admiration for someone
similar to- regard, value
EX: In order to be elected, you’ve got to attract the support and esteem of the population.

Indolent
lazy.
Similar to- slowness, apathy
EX: the teacher was tired of her indolent effort
Catharsis
A way of dealing with bad or strong feelings and emotions, by expressing or experiencing them through writing, talking etc.
EX: Greek tragedy
Clemency
Forgiveness and less severe punishment for a crime, usually given by someone in power such as a governor or president
EX: parents can give clemency for whatever trouble you’re in

a liquid that produces small bubbles of gas
something or someone that is cheerful or active (personality wise)
EX: someone has a bubbly, cheerful personality

literary- cheerful and having no worries
EX: blithe person- doesn’t worry or care about actions–> may seem to be always cheerful
Fallacy
false idea or belief, especially one that most people believe to be true
a weakness or break in someone’s argument or thinking/logic in a piece of writing
Frivolous
not serious or sensible that is not appropriate for a certain occasion
a person who likes having fun rather than getting to business
EX: going to the movies the night before a exam is frivolous
Hindrance
something or someone that makes it difficult for you to do something successfully
the act of making it difficult for someone to do something
EX: a person can be a hindrance- they can be a obstacle
friends who like to waste time get you to hang with them instead of doing your homework
jeopardy
in danger of being lost or harmed
to risk losing or spoiling something important of value
anomaly
something that is noticeable because it is different from what is usual
suggests that there is a norm this anomaly does not fit into
EX: snowing in CA
Antithesis
the exact opposite of something, or something that is completely different from something else
There is two differences- one is not considered weird- they are just different
Elation
a feeling of extreme happiness and excitement
happiness based on good news or good situation- NOT A JOKE
EX: feeling elation after doing well on a exam
Jocular
joking or humorous
EX: a person can be jocular
Joking or using humor to create a happy or lighthearted situation
Appease
to make someone less angry to stop him or her from attacking you by giving him or her what he or she wants
EX: peace offering
He appeased his wife by bringing home flowers and offering to do the laundry.
Assuage
to make a bad feeling less painful or severe -
comforting rather than giving someone something
EX: bad nightmare- parents will assuage you until you’re able to fall asleep again by speaking to you
Serene
someone who is calm and relaxed
a place or situation that is very calm
state of being calm- setting being peaceful
EX: Jan looked over a serene landscape of rolling hills.
Placid
calm and peaceful
person, place, or situation can be placid
However, suggests person cannot become excited, upset, or stormy.
