Definition- The presentation of details, characters, or incidents in a narrative in such a way that later events are prepared for (or “shadowed forth”)
Example- “Foreshadowing can be, in fact, a form of ‘backwriting.’ The writer goes back through the copy and adds foreshadowing to prepare the reader for later events.
More Information- The witches in the opening scene of Shakespeare’s Macbeth foreshadow the evil events that will follow.
Foreshadowing
Definition- adjective intended to explain or describe something.
Example- However, he too often employs lengthy expository.
More information- A pedagogical term for any form of writing that conveys information and explains ideas: exposition.
Expository
Definition-
Vivid descriptive language that appeals to one or more of the senses (sight, hearing, touch, smell, and taste).
Example- Sometimes imagery is also used to refer to figurative language, in particular metaphors and similes.

Imagery
Definition- the expression of one’s meaning by using language that normally signifies the opposite, typically for humorous or emphatic effect.
Example- the use of words that mean the opposite of what you really think especially in order to be funny
More Information-a situation that is strange or funny because things happen in a way that seems to be the opposite of what you expected
Irony
Definition- the ordinary language people use in speaking or writing
Example- a literary medium distinguished from poetry especially by its greater irregularity and variety of rhythm and its closer correspondence to the patterns of everyday speech
More Information- a dull or ordinary style, quality, or condition
Prose
Definition- flash·back- a part of a story or movie that describes or shows something that happened in the past
Example- a strong memory of a past event that comes suddenly into a person’s mind
More Information- a recession of flame to an unwanted position (as into a blowpipe)
