Didactic

Ellipsis
in a sentence, the omission of a word or words replaced by three periods

An indirect, less offensive way of saying something that is considered unpleasant

Analogy
Comparison of two different things that are similar in some way
- “America is to the world as the hippo is to the jungle”
Hyperbole
Exaggeration
-“my mother will kill me if i am late”
Idiom
A common, often used expression that doesn’t make sense if you take it literally
-“I got chewed out by my coach”
Metaphor
Comparison not using “like” or “as”
- “My feet are popsicles”
Metonymy
Replacing an actual word or idea, with a related word or concept
- “I could not understand his tongue”
Synecdoche
when a whole is represented by naming one of his parts
- “Check out my new wheels”
- “Sails” –> “Ship”
Simile
Comparison using “like” or “as”
Synesthesia
Describing one kind of sensation in terms of another
- “A purplish scent filled the room”
Personification
Giving human like qualities to something that is not human
- “the tired old truck groaned as it inched up the hill”
