Conflict
A struggle between opposing needs, desires, or emotions within a single character(internal)- a character’s struggle against an outside force(external)
Mood
The feeling in a piece of literary work created by using descriptive language
Genre
A category of literature or other form of entertainment based on certain criteria
Setting
A place where something is positioned it where an event takes place
Colloquial
Informal words, phrases, or slang used in writing to add to cultural and social aspects
Free Verse
A poem that is absent of any kind of structure, rhythm, or rhyme
Sonnet Form
A 14-line poem, each line containing 10 syllables with 3 quatrains and a rhyming couplet
End Rhyme
The most common type of rhyme and is when rhyming words appear at the ends of the lines of the poem
Ballad Form
A narrative poem that was originally meant to be sung, 4 line stanzas with rhythm and rhyme, contains dialogue and repetition
Half Rhyme
Words with similar, but not identical sounds
Passive Voice
A type of sentence or clause in which the subject receives the action of the verb
Active Voice
A type of sentence or clause in which the subject performs the action
First Person Point of View
A narrative unfolding through a specific person’s eyes; uses the pronouns “I,me, we, us, and our
Second Person Point of View
Narrative mode where characters are referred to by personal pronouns like “you and your”
Third Person Point of View
Writing using pronouns like “he, she, or they”
Antagonist
A character who struggles and fights against the protagonist, often the villain of a narrative
