Whiskey
Distilled from fermented grain mash. Made from Barley.
Aged in oak barrels
Bonded - straight whiskey. Aged for 4+ years. Not less than 100 proof.
Bourbon - distilled from no less than 51% corn.
Canadian - Canada. 3-5 years
Corn - distilled from no less than 80% corn.
Irish - Ireland. Can be single malt.
Rye - distilled from no less than 51% rye.
Scotch - smokey. Scotland. Can be single malt.
Blended - whiskey + neutral grains + blending agents.
Vodka
Primarily corn, wheat and/or potatoes. High alcohol content. Not aged. Highly filtered and refined. Colourless.
Gin
Neutral grain spirits redistilled over juniper berries and aromatics.
Colourless.
Not aged.
Rum
Distilled from fermented sugar cane and molasses.
Light bodied - light or dark. Most popular.
Heavy bodied - more sweet and pungent. Thick
Tequila
Blue agave plant. 2 regions of Mexico - near Tequila and Tepatition. Ordinary - white. Anejo - more than one year. Gold - aged for 2-4 years.
Brandy
Fermented mash of grapes or other fruit.
“true” brandy - any fruit.
Brandy refers to grape wine.
Cognac - made only in Cognac region of France.
