Q

What happens to a solid when it’s heated?

A

Solids vibrate their particles around the same area when they are heated. Their particles don’t freely move. The solid slightly expands

Q

What happens to a liquid when it’s heated?

A

Liquid particles move around more when they get heated but they stay roughly in the same area. The liquid expands

Q

What is a pure substance?

A

It is a substance made out of a single element or compound. It is important to not that every pure substance has a specific melting point/ boiling point.

15
Q

Is a mixture pure?

A

No, it is not because it will melt or boil gradually over a range of temperatures

16
Q

What is an ionic bond?

A

an ionic bond is when a metal loses an electron to give it to a non metal who takes the electron. Hence an ionic bond is the transfer of electrons.

17
Q

what are examples of ionic compounds?

A

NaCl, KCl,MgO, Na2O

18
Q

What type of structure does an ionic bond have? what are the implications?

A

Ionic compounds have a lattice structure, the ions within the structure are strongly attracted to each other via electrostatic attraction, therefore this results in ionic compounds having a high melting/ boiling point.

19
Q

What is a covalent bond?

A

It is a bond produced when atoms share electrons, atoms involved in producing the covalent bond achieve a full outer shell. This makes them very stable. It is also important to note that there is a strong electrostatic attraction between the positively charged nuclei of the atoms involved and the negatively charged shared electrons.
