Liquids And Solids Flashcards
What is the difference between intramolecular vs intermolecular forces?
Intramolecular forces are ones within an atom and molecule.
Intermolecular forces are ones that are between different molecules or particles.
What does the kinetic molecular theory say about IMFs between gas particles?
There are no significant intermolecular forces between gas particles as the gas particles are so far apart as to render IMFs negligible.
Give three examples of intramolecular forces.
Ionic
Covalent
Metallic
Give three examples of intermolecular forces.
Dipole dipole
London dispersion
Hydrogen bonds
Describe London Dispersion Forces
Weakest IMF
Exists between non-polar molecules
The larger the molecule, the larger the dispersion force because larger atoms have a greater tendency for temporary dipoles as the electrons are farther away from the nucleus
Describe dipole-dipole forces
Stronger than dispersion forces
Exists between polar molecules
Hydrogen bond
Not an actual bond Strongest IMF but still weaker than actual bonds Exists between: H-N H-O H-F
What is the major difference between liquids and gases?
The distance between the particles.
Define cohesion
Force of attraction between identical molecules
Define adhesion
Force of attraction between difference molecules
