Lippincott: Cell & Molecular Biology Chapter 2 Flashcards
What is connective tissue composed of?
Connective tissue is composed of molecules that make up the extracellular matrix (ECM) with few cells
What is the most abundant tissue that separates and connects various tissues
Connective tissues
What is important for holding cells together and to their ECM
Adhesion
Combination of cells and ECM form what?
structures that make up functional tissues and organs
What is the top of epithelial cells called?
Free surface
W hat is the bottom of the epithelial cell attached to
The basement membrane
More about the basement membrane
Stratified with 3 separate zones
What are the 3 zones of the basement membrane
1) lamina lucida: clear layer 2) lamina densa: dense layer 3) reticular lamina: made up of connective tissue cells
What is the basal lamina composed of?
Lamina lucida and lamina densa (the basal lamina is being manufactured by epithelial cells)
What is the zone under the basement membrane
Lamina propria: loose connective tissue
What makes up the mucosal layer?
Epithelium + Basement membrane + lamina propria
Does epithelial tissue have blood vessels?
No, so the nutrients come from the underlying connective tissue
Does connective tissue have good blood supply?
Yes, except cartilage and adipose tissue (which has a little)
Connective tissue relation to the ECM
Loose arrangement of cells in ECM
Function of connective tissue
Support, connecting things
