What are lipomas?
A
Slow-growing, benign adipose tumours most often found in subcutaneous tissues.

Describe the aetiology of Lipomas
A
Benign tumours of adipocytes
Occur wherever fat can expand i.e. not scalp or palms

List 5 conditions associated with Lipomas
A
Familial multiple lipomatosis Gardner's syndrome Dercum's disease Madelung's disease Liposarcoma: rare malignancy, suspect if rapid growth/ hardening/ vascularisation

Describe the epidemiology of Lipomas
A
Any age but most common: 40-60 yrs
Relatively COMMON

What are the symptoms of Lipomas?
A
Most are ASYMPTOMATIC
Compression of nerves can cause pain

Describe the appearance of Lipomas
A
Smooth normal surface Skin coloured Most < 5 cm in diameter Mobile Soft/doughy feel Hint of fluctuance

A
Clinically

US/ MRI/ CT used if doubt about dx
