Lipoma Flashcards
Define Lipoma
Benign tumour of the adipose cells under a tissue
slow growing, and have no chance of metastases
One of most common tumours-in arms and chest
rarely-GI Lipoma-obstruction can cause issues
closely related to liposarcomas-need to differentiate them
Aetiology and risk factors of Lipoma
idiopathic -no specific cause
risk factors
40-60
FHx
Epidiemology of Lipoma
1% of everyone has lipoma
occur at any age, but more commonly 40-60
Signs and Sx of Lipoma
accessible lesion
less than 5cm, painless, rounded and mobile
Skin overlying is normal
Soft/doughy feel
tenderness suggest abscesses
>10cm and harder suggest liposarcoma
Masses in peritoneum-can feel like abdominal mass
can lead to bowel obstruction, lower muscle weakness, paresthesia, GI bleeds
pain is very rare, weight loss uncommon
Investigations of Lipoma
Imaging is the main port of call
MRI is modality of choice-discrete, small, encapsulated
( can be within muscle or have inflam/necrosis-making them look like well differentiated liposarcoma)
CT-same but not as good
USS-same
Core needle biopsy first
Then incision biopsy
Then excisonal
