LIPOMA Flashcards
(a) The most common benign mesenchymal neoplasm in adults and are composed of
mature white adipocytes.
(b) Lipomas can occur on any part of the body and usually develop superficially in
the subcutaneous tissue.
(c) Most often occur on the neck, trunk, and on the extremities, but can occur
anywhere on the body.
(d) arely symptomatic and generally painless.
(e) A patient may have one or many lipomas
LIPOMA
Presentation
(1) Lipomas present as soft, painless subcutaneous nodules ranging in size from 1 to >10
cm.
(2) Occur most frequently on the trunk and upper extremities and can be round, oval, or
multilobulated.
(3) Frequently, patients may have more than one lipoma.
(4) Malignant transformation of a lipoma into a liposarcoma is rare
Differential Diagnosis
(1) Epidermal Inclusion Cysts
(2) Angiolipoma
Labs/Studies/Imaging
(1) Biopsy for rapidly growing lesions.
(2) Transition of a preexisting lipoma to an atypical lipomatous tumor represents an
exceedingly rare phenomenon (<0.1%)
Treatment
(1) Treatment is not usually required. Lipomas may be excised by Dermatology for:
(a) Cosmetic concerns
(b) Pain
(c) Impedance of duties
Complications
(1) Classical lipomas are entirely benign and recur only rarely.
(2) Intramuscular/intermuscular lipoma recurrence rate up to 20%
(3) Cosmetic concerns
