Lipoleomyoma Flashcards
What is a uterine lipoleiomyoma?
What is the incidence?
Rare benign tumour of the uterus
Results from the degeneration of smooth muscle cells in an ordinary leiomyoma
Incidence: 0.03-0.2%
What patient population are lipoleiomyomas found?
postmenopausal with typical fibroids
What consists of a uterine lipoleiomyoma?
Adipocytes and smooth muscle cells separated by thin fibrous tissue. Potentially represents fatty metaplasia of the smooth muscle cells of a leiomyoma.
What are the ultrasound findings of a lipoleiomyoma?
Hyperechoic with partially hypoechoic rim
(rim is layer of myometrium surrounding the fatty central component)
Posterior acoustic attenuation
poor vascularity on colour doppler
Location of lipoleiomyoma within the uterus?
Intramural
Submucosal
Subserosal
