Lipids & Cholesterol Flashcards
Why do fats yield more energy than carbohydrates?
Exist more reduced form than carbs therefore yield more energy when oxidised
What are the uses of lipids?
Energy storage, thermal and electrical insulation, transport (lipid soluble vitamins), hormones
What forces are lipids held together by
Vander Walls forces
Diff. between saturated and unsaturated fats
Sat=single bonds Unsat.=presence of double bond
Function of LDL
Increase uptake of cholesterol into cell lining which increases pressure within blood vessels
Function of HDL
Carry cholesterol back to the liver where some is secreted as bile; reduce uptake
Why unsat. fats have lower MP than sat. fats?
Due to presence of db’s chains can’t pack as tightly therefore I.M. forces are weaker and a lower MP
