Q

What are sphingosines?

A

Sphingosines are glycolipids. They form the backbone of sphinolipids which form the membranes of the central nervous system.

Q

What are cerebrosides?

A

Cerebrosides is the common name for a group of sphingolipids. These form the membranes for the brain cell membrane

Q

Why do membranes form a sphere?

A

It is energetically favourable for membrane to form a sphere. This is because if it was flat, there would be exposed fatty acid tails. In a sphere, there are no exposed fatty acid tails.

17
Q

What is cholesterols role in membrane fluidity?

A

At higher temperatures, it stiffens the membrane by filling space between fatty acids.
At lower temperatures, it increases fluidity by preventing fatty acid tails packing too closely.
Essentially it maintains a certain range of fluidity that otherwise would be drastically larger.

18
Q

Why are glycolipids mainly on the outside of the membrane?

A

They are antigens so must be on the outside.

19
Q

What does the word ‘amphipathic’ mean?

A

A molecule that exhibits hydrophilic and hydrophobic properties.

20
Q

What is the steroid template?

A

The basis for all steroid hormones and sterol lipids.

21
Q

What does the steroid template look like?
