Lipids and Ester Bonds Flashcards
1
Q
What are Lipids? Properties? Types? Functions?
A
- C H and O (less O than carbs)
- Non polar and hydrophobic (insoluble in water)
- Triglycerides (main component for fats and oils) and phospholipids
- They play a role in energy storage, insulation, hormonal communication and energy yield
2
Q
What are triglycerides? Properties, composition
A
Properties
- Non polar, hydrophobic
- Saturated or Unsaturated
Structure
- Glycerol and fatty acids
- Methyl group, then R group chain, then carboxyl group
- RCOOH
3
Q
What are phospholipids?
A
- 2 fatty acids and 1 phosphate group bonded to 1 glycerol molecule
- Polar due to phosphate group
- Amphipathic (hydrophilic and hydrophobic)
4
Q
Esterification
A
- Formation of ester bonds
- Forms triglycerides
- When OH (glycerol) bonds with COOH (fatty acid)
- Condensation reaction
