Lipids Flashcards
What is a bond in a lipid called?
An ester bond.
What do lipids contain?
Carbon, hydrogen and oxygen.
Are lipids polar or non polar? Are they soluble?
They’re non polar compounds and are insoluble in water.
What are lipids soluable in?
Organic solvents such as alcohol.
What are reactions between fatty acids and glycerol called?
Condensation reactions.
What are two traits of a phospholipid?
Hydrophilic and polar.
What is attatched to an ester bond in a phospholipid?
A phosphate group. The phosphate replaces a fatty acid tail.
What is a wax?
A wax is a lipids that melts above 45°C. They are typically waterproof.
Describe the structure of a saturated fatty acid.
Single bonds between carbons.
Describe the structure of an unsaturated fatty acid.
Double bonds between carbons which have a ‘kink’.
What are the roles of lipids?
Cell membrane is made of phospholipids. Myelin sheath around nerve cells to provide electrical insulation.
What are traits of triglycerides.
Energy reserves in animal and plants, thermal insulation (against heat loss), protection. They also have metabolic water.
