Lipids Flashcards
What are lipids?
Biological molecules which are only soluble in organic solvents such as alcohols.
What does it mean if a lipid is saturated?
The lipid does not contain any carbon-carbon double bond, e.g. animal fats.
What does it mean if a lipid is unsaturated?
The lipid contains carbon-carbon double bonds and melt at lower temperatures than saturated fats, e.g. found in plants.
What does a triglyceride consist of?
-1 glycerol molecule
-3 fatty acids
What is the bond called between the glycerol and the fatty acids?
Ester bonds.
How is an ester bond formed?
Condensation reaction.
What is a triglyceride used for?
Energy reserves in plant and animal cell.
What does a phospholipid consist of?
-1 glycerol molecule
-2 fatty acids
-1 phosphate group
What does the phosphate group form?
A hydrophilic head-attracted to water. It is negatively polar.
What do the fatty acids form?
A hydrophobic tail-repelled by water. It is non-polar.
