lipids Flashcards
What elements are contained in lipids?
Carbon, hydrogen and oxygen
What bond does an unsaturated fatty acid have that a saturated doesn’t?
Has a double carbon bond.
What are triglycerides biological roles?
-storage of energy
-insulation
-protection
What are phospholipids composed of?
Hydrophilic head (glycerol and phosphate)
hydrophobic tails (fatty acids)
What is the structure of a steroid?
4 ring structure
What does a triglyceride look like?
.
What are 3 important groups of lipids?
Triglycerides, phosphiolipids and steroids.
What is a triglyceride?
Condensation reaction- produces 3 water molecules. the bond formed between the -OH groups of the glycerol and the -COOH of the fatty acids are called ester bonds.
What are phospholipids used for?
Membranes
What does a phospholipid look like?
.
What is a phospholipid?
Lipids in which one of the fatty acids is substituted for a phosphate group.
What does glycerol look like?
.
What are lipids?
A large and varied group of non-polar molecules that aren insoluble in water, but dissolvable easily in organic solvents
What are fatty acids made up of?
A carboxylate acid group (-COOH) and a long hydrocarbon chain or varying lengths
What is the saturated fatty acids general formula?
CnH2nO2
