lipids Flashcards
what are the main charctistics of lipids
they contain carbon, hydrogen and oxygen
they are insoluble in water
they are soluble to organic solvents such as alcohol
what are some roles of lipids
source off energy
waterproofing
insulation
protection
triglycerides have three fatty acids and combined with glycerol, what bond and reaction
forms an ester bond with a condensation reaction
what is it called when a lipid is single double bond
mono-unsaturated
if its more than one double bond what is it called
polyunsaturated
what is the structure triglycerides
excellent store of energy
low mass to energy making them good storage molecules
large,non-polar and insoluble so does not affect water potential
How are phospholipids similar to lipids ?
One of the fatty acids are replaced with a phosphate molecule.
What is a phospholipid made of
A hydrophilic head a hydrophobic tail
Structure of phospholipids
Phospholipids are polar.
The phospholipid structure allows them to form glycolipids by combining carbohydrates with the cell surface membrane.
The head helps to hold the surface membrane
