Lipids Flashcards
What is a Lipid?
- Hydrophobic
- Contains H,C,O
- Makes up fatty acids and their derivatives
Lipids contain how much more energy than Carbohydrates and Proteins?
They contains
- 2.25x more per gram than Carbohydrates and Proteins
- More C–C leads to greater energy available when broken
What are the type of Lipids and which ones are important?
- Simple
2.Derived
3.Compouds
4.Sterols
Simple and Derived are the most important of the Lipids
What are Simple Lipids?
- Simple lipids are fatty acids with alcohol groups
What are Compound Lipids?
- Fatty acid with alcohol + a functional group
- Phosphoric acid and N-Phospholipids
- CHO (carbohydrate) -> Glycolipids
- Protein- Lipoprotein (helps to transport fat in the bloodstream)
What are Derived Lipids?
- They are products of hydrolysis
2. Invidiual fatty acids, glycerol, and other alcoholic compounds
What are Sterol Lipids?
- Compounds containing a phenanthrene ring
2, i.e. cholesterol
What are special lipids needed for the brain?
- Sphingnolipids
2. Cerebrosides
What are Lecithins?
- Used for digestion of fat (hydrophobic)
2. Has same components as fats
What are the Volatile Fatty Acid (VFA’s) names and how many carbon do they contain.
Acetic acid (2 carbon) Propionic Acid ( 3 carbon) Butyric Acid ( 4 carbon)
What would be the difference between lipids and fats?
Not all lipids are fats, but all fats are lipids.
Fat being a general term.
Lipids being a technical term.
What do Lipids not contain?
They do not contain glycerol (ex. steroids)
