Lipid Lowering Agents Flashcards
Most effective at lowering LDLs and TC
Statins
2 weeks to see a reduction in LDLs, 6-8wks for therapeutic level
Statins
Primarily used as adjuncts, or as second line
Bile sequestrants
Most effective in lowering triglycerides and increasing HDLs
Fibrates
Creates more LDL receptors in liver and more HDL to bring LDLs back for recycling
Statins
Prevents reabsorption by forming complex with cholesterol in bile acids to be excreted
Bile sequestrants
Activate lipoprotein lipase and increases secretion of cholesterol into bile
Fibrates
Beneficial actions of statins
Allow BVs to dilate, improves abnormal endothelial wall production, stabilizes atherosclerotic plaques, reduces formation of thrombin, reduces risk of thrombis, decreased inflammation at site, decreased risk of a fib, decreased calcification at site.
Used in primary and secondary prevention of CV events
Statins
Used in post MI therapy
Statins
Can decrease mortality in diabetes by controlling risk factors
Statins
Used in patients with partial biliary obstruction
Novo-choline, a bile sequestrant
Decreases elevated plasma triglycerides and raises HDLs
Fibrates
Can cause hepatotoxicity
Statins
Can cause myopathy that leads to myositis that leads to rhabdomyolosis
