Lipid Digestion Flashcards
What are lipids digested into and by what
By lipase and bile salts
Digested into monoglyceride and fatty acids
What are micelles
Fatty acid and monoglycerides that is non polar
How do micelles get into the intestine
Due to them being non polar they diffuse across the cell surface membrane to enter epithelial cells of small intestine
What happens to the monoglycerides and fatty acids once inside the epithelial cell
Transported to the ER where they recombine to form triglycerides
Then starting in the ER amd continuing in the Golgi apparatus the triglycerides associate with cholesterol and lipoproteins to form CHYLOMICRONS
Chylomicrons then move out of the cell by exocytosis
They enter the lacteals ( lymphatic capillaries) at the centre of each villus
After the lymph they then pass into the bloodstream
Triglycerides in the chlomicrons are hydrolysed by an enzyme in the endothelial cells of blood capillaries and then diffuse into cells
Process involved in absorption + transport of the lipid molecules from ileum to lymph vessels
- micelles contain bile salts + fatty acids + monoglycerides
- they make fatty acids more soluble in water and bring them to the lining of the ilieum
- fatty acid absorbed by diffusion
- triglycerides reform in cells + vesicles move to cell membrane
Describe the roles of micelles in absorption
- include fatty acids and bile salts
- make fatty acids more soluble in water
- bring fatty acid and monoglycerides to lining of the ilieum
- fatty acids absorbed by diffusion
Where is lipase produced and what does it do
Produced in the pancreas
Hydrolyses the ester bond in triglycerides to form monoglycerides and fatty acids
What do bile salts do
Emulsify lipids to form micelles
Increases SA for lipase to act on
