Linkage Flashcards
What is linkage?
The alleles of two genes on the same chromosome cannot segregate independently (move to opposite poles during meiosis) because they’re on the same physical structure so they must move together.
What is the consequence of linkage?
If the gamete is fertilised, All those alleles will be incorporated into the genome of the offspring.
What complicates linkage?
Crossing over.
What does crossing over produce?
Recombinant genotypes In linked genes.
What can independent assortment cause?
Recombinant genotypes in unlinked genes?
Sometimes Mendelian ratios don’t apply. What causes this?
If the number of progeny with different combinations of characteristics are not corresponding with Mendelian ratios, it is likely that the genes are linked.
How do you work out the crossover value?
Number of recombinants / number of progeny x100
