Link Reaction Flashcards
1
Q
Where does the link reaction occur?
A
in the matrix of the mitochondria
2
Q
What is the first stage of the link reaction?
A
the pyruvate is oxidised and decarboxylated by removing H+ and CO2
H+ is accepted by NAD to form NADH which is then used to form ATP
3
Q
What is the second stage of the link reaction?
A
2-carbon molecule (acetyl group) is formed
acetyl group combines with coenzyme A to form acetylcoenzyme A
4
Q
How many CO2’s are formed?
A
2 - one per each pyruvate molecule
5
Q
What is the overall equation for the link reaction?
A
pyruvate + NAD + CoA –> acetylCoA + NADH + CO2
6
Q
What are the yields for the link reaction (per pyruvate molecule)?
A
1 NADH molecule
1 CO2 molecule
