LINES,TUBES AND CATHETERS Flashcards
Endotracheal intubation (ETT)
is placed to take over the breathing for patients in respiratory distress
-Properly placed tubes distal tip is 1”-2” superior to the tracheal bifurcation AKA the Carina
Central Venous Lines(CVP) insertion
are inserted into a large central vein. Superior vena cava
-Insertion site is usually in the neck or by the clavicle.(subclavian vein)
CVP uses
few examples are, medication administration, blood pressure monitoring,
PICC Line for long term treatment
Most common CVP lines
SWAN GANZ catheter and HICKMAN catheter
Chest Tubes
chest tube is used to
remove fluid, blood, and air from the plural cavity.
Re-expand a collapsed lung
-patient can have multiples of this type of tube
Placement of Chest tube
Usually inserted between 5-6 intercostal ribs
Urinary Catheters
foley catheter is a rubber/plastic(tube) catheter inserted through the urethra, into the bladder for the removal of urine.
Urinary Catheters Insertion
Insertion of a tube into the bladder is placed under aseptic technique
Intravenous lines reasons for insertion
medication, chemotherapy administration, intravenous fluids and central venous pressures, infusionpumps
-solution bag 18-24 inches above the level of the vein.
-They are inserted using aseptic technique
Extravasation
Is an Infiltrate- will cause tissue necrosis when the IV fluid infiltrates into surrounding tissue
Nasal Gastric Tube
plastic or rubber tube inserted through the nasopharynx down into the esophagus into the stomach.
Does not require the use of sterile gloves
Nurse or NP does this bedside
The primary use of a NG tube is decompression or removal of flatus or fluids from the stomach.
NG tubes are used for liquid nutrition and medication administration, as well.
Uriteral Stent
flexible tube from ureter to bladder to restrict flow of the urine
Non-aseptic Technique can be used to do these things…
wearing gloves etc is done
NG tubes
Enemas: barium enema to insert
contrast
Urinals/Bedpans
Aseptic
describes a product or method that is free of microbiological organisms
-Surgical asepsis
-Medical asepsis
Surgical asepsis
The procedure used to prevent contamination of microbes and endospores before, during, and after surgery using sterile technique.
Any medical procedure that requires penetration of body tissue needs surgical asepsis
