Function - Measures pulmonary artery pressure
Diagnosis - Cardiac patients
Placement - Femoral vein, Subclavian vein, jugular vein
Precautions - Subclavian - abduction limited. femoral less than 30 degrees hip flexion, limited abduction
Name - Intracranial pressure monitor
Function - pressure within the skull
Diagnosis - Closed head injuries, cerebral
hemorrhage, brain tumor, or overproduction of cerebrospinal fluid
Placement - Hole drilled in skull
Precautions - limited physical mobility, avoid Valsalva or isometric, limit neck flexion, hip flexion greater than 90, prone, below 15 degrees horizontal
Name - Arterial line
Function - Measures blood pressure and takes blood samples
Diagnosis - Close cardiac monitoring
Placement - Radial artery
Precautions - ROM limited near line placement
Name - Hickman catheter
Function - Administer medications, remove blood, measure central venous pressure
Diagnosis - Bone marrow, cancer, trauma
Placement - Upper chest wall
Precautions - Avoid occluding the line, avoid ROM near
Name - Foley Catheter
Function - Drain urine
Diagnosis - Surgery, lost control of bladder function
Placement - Urethra, balloon holds in place
Precautions - Empty if full, avoid pulling or kinking, below level of bladder
Name - Nasogastric tube
Function - remove fluid or gas, evaluate digestive activity, medications, specimens, food, treatment
Diagnosis - Dysphagia, consciousness disorders
Placement - Nares to the stomach
Precautions - Avoid cervical flexion and excess rotation, do not lay down less than 30 degrees while feeding
Name - Gastric tube
Function - Nutrients, medications, remove fluids
Diagnosis - Swallowing disorders, comas
Placement - over the stomach
Precautions - Do not punch or irritate, secure, ensure closure, place feeding on hold before mobilization
Name - Intravenous infusion line
Function - Fluids, nutrients, electrolytes, infusions
Diagnosis - General populations
Placement - Superficial veins
Precautions - Hold medication during PT session
Name - Nasal canula Function - Administer oxygen Diagnosis - CP limitation Placement - Nose Precautions - Monitor O2 sat during activity
Name - Tracheostomy mask Function - Oxygen administration Diagnosis - CP limitations Placement - Over the trachea Precautions - Monitor O2 sat during activity
Name - Chest tube
Function - Remove air, blood, fluid
Diagnosis - alterations in fluid reduction or retention, CP issues
Placement - outer chest wall
Precautions - keep below level of chest, not placed on its side, closely monitor patient response
Name - Mechanical ventilation
Function - Pushes air into the patient’s lungs
Diagnosis - Disorders of consciousness, interference of gas exchange
Placement - Orally or tracheostomy
Precautions - Ensure tubing is not obstructed
Name - Sequential compressive devices Function - Prevent DVT Diagnosis - Immobile patients Placement - Over lower legs Precautions - Remove before exercise, replace after
Name - External ventricular device
Function - Monitors intracranial pressure, drains blood and CSF
Diagnosis - Closed head injuries, cerebral
hemorrhage, brain tumor, or overproduction of cerebrospinal fluid
Placement - On the top of the scull
Precautions - Must be leveled with the ear
