Q

you are engaged Holmes, perhaps I interrupt you

A

not at all watson, i am glad to have a friend with whom I can discuss my results. The matter is a perfectly trivial one, but there are points in connection with it that are not entirely devoid of interest or even of instruction

Q

solve some mystery and provide punishment of some crime

A

no no, no crime. only one of those whimsical little incidents which happen when you have four million human beings all jostling each other within the space of a few square miles. many a little problem will be presented which may be striking and bizzare without being criminal.

Q

would this be his hat?

A

No no he found it. Its owner is unknown .It arrived here upon christmas morning in company with a good fat goose, which is I have no doubt roasting at this moment in front of peterson’s fire. the facts are these, about 4 oclock on christmas morning, peterson who as you know is a very honest fellow was returning from some small jollification and making his way homeward. In front of him he saw in the gaslight a tallish man carrying a white goose slung over his shoulder. As he reached the corner of Goodge Street a row broke out between the stranger and some roughs. One of them knocked off the man’s hat and he raised his stick to defend himself, smashing a shop window behind him. Outnumbered he dropped his goose, took to his heels and vanished into a labyrinth of small streets. Peterson returned with this tattered hat and a most unimpeachable christmas goose

Q

what then did peterson do?

A

he brought round both hat and goose to me on Christmas morning, knowing even the smallest problem is of interest to me. The goose we retained until this morning, when there were signs it should be eaten immediately, the finder took it off to fulfill the destiny of the goose, while I retain the hat of the unknown gentleman who lost his christmas dinner

Q

then what can you infer

A

the man is an intellectual, and was well-to-do though he has now fallen on evil days. There is some evil influence, probably drink, at work upon him. This may account also for the obvious fact that his wife has ceased to love him

Q

if i remember all right

A

exactly, on december 22nd, john horner, a plumber, was accused of abstracting it from the lady’s jewel case, the evidence is seen as overwhelming. So much for the police court. The question for us now to solve is the sequence of events leading from the jewel case to the crop of a goose in Tottenham court road. You see watson, our little deductions have suddenly assumed a much more important and less innocent aspect. the stone came from Mr. henry baker, the gentleman with the bad hat. we must find Mr baker and ascertain what part he has played in our little mystery. Simplest means first, we advertise. Should that fail, I should have recourse to other methods. “found at the corner of Goodge street, a goose and a black felt hat, Mr. Henry baker can have same by applying at 6:30 this evening at 221B baker st.
clear and concise.

A

Ah yes, I shall keep the stone thank you. And i say peterson just buy a goose on your way back and leave it here with me. We must have one to go in place of the one your family is now devouring
Just see how it glints and sparkles…..

Q

and what about henry baker

A

I think watson that henry baker had no idea that the bird he was carrying was of considerably more value than had it been made of solid gold
goodbye watson I must continue my professional round but I’ll be back at the time mentioned to untangle the tangle.
Good evening watson, I have met our henry baker at the door, pray take the chair by the fire Mr. Baker. Is this your hat sir?

A

you are endeavoring to trace some geese sold by mrs. oakshot of brixton road to a salesman named breckinridge sold in turn to Mr. windgate of the alpha, and by him to his club of which mr. henry baker is a member

Q

james ryder

A

precisely so, head attendant at the hotel cosmopolitan, come along and all will be revealed.
here we are the fire looks very seasonable in this weather. You looked chilled mr. ryder, pray sit by the fire, i will just put on my slippers before we settle this little matter of yours. now, let us comfortably address what became of those geese

17
Q

with the greatest pleasure

A

or rather I fancy of that goose, there was one bird, i imagine, in which you were interested, white with a black bar across the tail.

18
Q

here?

A

yes and a remarkable bird it proved, quite intriguing, it laid an egg after it was dead. the bonniest brightest little blue egg that was ever seen
the games up ryder
give him a dash of brandy watson, he hasn’t blood enough in him to go in for a felony
so! looking a bit more human. Now, i have almost every link in my hands and all the proof i should need so there is little you need to tell me. however, you had heard ryder, of this blue stone of the countess of morcar’s?

19
Q

it was Catherine Cusack who told me of it

A

i see, her ladyship’s waiting maid. Well the temptation of wealth was too much for you, as it had been for better men before you, but you were not very scrupulous in the means you used. pretty villain though you are. you knew that this man, horner, the plumber had been concerned in some nasty matter before and that suspicion would rest more readily upon him. What did you do then? you made some small job in my lady’s room-you and your confederate cusack-and you arranged that he should he the man called for. then you rifled the jewel case raised the alarm and had this unfortunate man arrested. You then-

20
Q

i’m begging you

A

get back in your chair. it’s all very well to cringe and crawl now

21
Q

then the charge against him will break down

A

hum! we will talk about that. and now let us hear a true account of the next act. how came the stone into the goose and how came the goose into the open market? tell us the truth, for there lies your only hope of safety

22
Q

wondered what it would be best to do

A

speak on sir, be brisk!

23
Q

exactly

A

which dealers?

24
Q

oh heavens bless you

A

no more words, get out!
after all watson, I am not retained by the police to supply their deficiencies. If horner were in danger, it would be another thing, but this fellow will not appear against him and the case must collapse. I suppose that i am commuting a felony but it is just possible that i am just saving a soul. this fellow will not go wrong again. send him to jail now and you make a jailbird for life. besides it is the season of forgiveness. Chance has put in our way a most singular and whimsical problem and its solution is its own reward. Quite energizing watson, a wonderful profession at its best. Come along watson I have an extraordinary desire for an ale and meat pie. come along and you shall pay.
