What do you mean your way? All the ways around here belong to me. But why did you come out here? Curtsy while your thinking it saves time.

Q

I was trying to reach the top of the hill.

A

I could show you hills in comparison with which you’d call that a valley

Q

A hill can’t be a valley you know, that would be nonsense.

A

I’ve heard nonsense compared with which that would be as sensible as a dictionary.

Q

What a curious country! All those straight little brooks.
And the ground between divided into squares. Yes! It’s marked out like a great chessboard. A great huge game of chess being played - all over the world - if this is the world. I wouldn’t mind being a pawn if could join in the game - but of course I’d really like to be a queen.

A

That’s easily managed. You’ll be the White Queen’s Pawn.Start in the second square. When you get to the eighth square you’ll be a queen.Faster! Faster!

Q

In our country , if you run very fast for a long time, you generally get to somewhere else.

A

That’s a slow sort of country. Hereabouts it takes all the running you can do to keep in the same place. If you want to get somewhere else, you must run at least twice as fast.

Q

Please would you tell me - is the game over now?

A

Speak when you’re spoken to! Always speak the truth - think before you speak - and write it down afterwards.

Q

I didn’t mean-

A

You should have meant! What do you suppose is the use of a child without any meaning? Even a joke should have some meaning - and a child’s more important than a joke, I hope.

Q

I’m so sleepy!

A

Poor thing smooth her head and sing her a lullaby like this:
Hush-a-by lady, in Alice’s lap!
Till the feast’s ready, we’ve time for a nap:
When the feast’s over, we’ll go to the ball - Red Queen, and White Queen and Alice and all! And now you know it, sing it through to both of us.

Q

Last line?

A

Queen Alice take care of yourself!
